The Bozeman community is mourning the tragic death of Sidney Callaghan following a fatal shooting incident that occurred outside the R Bar in downtown Bozeman during the early morning hours of Monday, May 25, 2026. The devastating incident has left family, friends, and community members shocked as authorities continue investigating the deadly altercation.

According to court documents, 22-year-old Jakob Steven Lundberg has been charged in connection with the shooting death of Sidney Callaghan, 29. Lundberg appeared in Gallatin County Justice Court on Tuesday, where bail was set at $1.5 million.

Investigators say the incident began with a physical altercation inside the R Bar involving Lundberg and Callaghan. Bar staff reportedly escorted both men outside, where the confrontation continued onto the Main Street sidewalk. Authorities allege that at some point during the dispute, Lundberg returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and came back to the scene before allegedly shooting Callaghan multiple times.

Court records state the shooting occurred in a crowded area with numerous people nearby both inside and outside the establishment. Following the gunfire, Callaghan was rushed to Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Law enforcement officials say Lundberg fled the scene in a Subaru WRX before being apprehended a short time later near North 7th Avenue by Walmart. During the investigation, authorities reportedly discovered an empty holster and a cell phone inside the vehicle. Detectives later recovered information indicating Lundberg allegedly admitted involvement in the shooting and expressed regret during questioning.

Surveillance footage from the R Bar and witness statements reportedly corroborated the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. Investigators also stated that Lundberg contacted his father following the incident and allegedly confessed, saying he had “made a big mistake.”

As the investigation continues, the loss of Sidney Callaghan has deeply impacted those who knew him. Friends and loved ones are remembering him while grieving a life taken far too soon. Community members continue expressing condolences to his family during this heartbreaking time.
